In reply to Jeremy's post, if you think you are being authentic by believing you are not selling anything, then why pick up the phone in the first place? The "I'm not selling anything" approach is like telling them as your opening statement... "This is a sales call". If you really want to be authentic, then get their attention. I have found the best way to get their attention is to make them laugh!

I really like the rabbit powered scooter approach..
I think I want to find a way to establish rapport in a genuine manner...even though they weren't expecting my call..I want to display that I am authentic and actually not selling anything but just determining if they would be a good fit..
